Amla Fruit Powder

$8.002 oz

Referred to as amlaki in Ayurveda, amla is the small, bright green, sour fruit from a small deciduous tree native to India. These fruits have been incorporated into Ayurvedic medicine for centuries and is typically employed as a tridoshic tonic herb. Also thought to have a special affinity for the heart, amla powder is often added to herbal formulations, extracts, and capsules. Our organic amla powder is ground from seedless Phyllanthus emblica fruits. Amla, or Indian gooseberry, is the fruit of a small to medium-sized deciduous tree native to India. The berries are greenish yellow with a fibrous inner texture. Harvested in autumn by hand, they have a sour, bitter, and astringent taste. In Hinduism, the amla tree is considered sacred to the goddess Lakshmi. A much-beloved staple of traditional Ayurvedic medicine, amla is considered a cooling pitta herb. The high tannin content also makes amla an excellent fixative for dyes, leading to its frequent incorporation into inks. Our amla powder is milled from dried fruit (seeds removed).

Brewing

Water 200-212°F. Steep 5-10 minutes. Leaves and flowers need less time; roots and barks often need more. Roots, bark and dense seeds may benefit from a longer steep or a gentle covered simmer.

  • Use about 1 level teaspoon of loose tea per 6-8 oz. of water unless the product label says otherwise.
  • For blended teas, follow the temperature of the most delicate true-tea base (green/white before black).
